Vaishno Devi, also known as Mata Rani, Trikuta, and Vaishnavi, is a manifestation of the Hindu Mother Goddess Durga. The shrine of Vaishno Devi is situated in the Trikuta Mountains in Jammu and Kashmir, India. The history of the shrine dates back to ancient times and is enveloped in mythology and folklore.
Mythological Origins
According to legend, Vaishno Devi was born as a human girl named Vaishnavi in the southern part of India. She was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu and performed intense penance to merge with him. During her meditation, Lord Rama, an incarnation of Vishnu, appeared and blessed her, promising that she would eventually become one with him in the form of Kalki, his final avatar.
After many years, Vaishnavi settled in the Trikuta Mountains, continuing her meditation and helping those in need. A demon named Bhairon Nath, attracted by her beauty and power, pursued her. To escape him, Vaishnavi entered a cave and continued her meditation. When Bhairon Nath found her, she assumed her divine form and beheaded him. His severed head fell at a distant place, where now stands the Bhairav Baba Temple. Bhairon Nath repented, and the goddess forgave him, granting him the boon that her pilgrimage would be considered incomplete without visiting his temple.

Banganga
Banganga is the first major stop on the yatra route, about 1 kilometer from Katra. According to legend, Goddess Vaishnavi created a spring of water by shooting an arrow into the ground, providing a refreshing drink for her devotee, Langoor-Veer. Pilgrims often take a dip in the holy waters before continuing their journey.
Charan Paduka
Located about 1.5 kilometers from Banganga, Charan Paduka is where the footprints of Mata Vaishno Devi are believed to be imprinted on a rock. It is a place of great reverence, and pilgrims stop here to offer prayers and seek blessings.
Adhkuwari
Adhkuwari, situated halfway along the yatra route (around 6 kilometers from Katra), is the site of the Garbh Joon cave where Mata Vaishno Devi meditated for nine months. Pilgrims visit the cave to pay their respects and experience the divine energy. The narrow cave passage symbolizes the birth canal, and passing through it is believed to be an act of spiritual rebirth.
